Places to See in Jaisalmer India Beyond the City Walls
The places to see in jaisalmer india extend well beyond the old city. Kuldhara, 18 kilometers away, is an abandoned village that was evacuated overnight in 1825 and has not been inhabited since. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains it and walking through the empty stone lanes and roofless houses is one of the most atmospheric experiences available anywhere in the region.
Bada Bagh, 6 kilometers from the city, has the royal cenotaphs of the Jaisalmer rulers. The chhatris are arranged in a garden on the edge of the desert and the late afternoon light on the sandstone is particularly beautiful. Free to enter and usually quiet.
Desert National Park, about 40 kilometers away, is one of the largest national parks in India and the best place to see the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard. Permits are required through the forest department but the park is worth the effort for nature-oriented travelers.
